How a Mummified Fairy Became Modern Folklore
In 2007, photographs of a tiny mummified fairy supposedly discovered in the Derbyshire countryside spread across the internet and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. Newspapers, television programmes, paranormal investigators and millions of people debated the same question: could it possibly be real?
Almost twenty years later, creator and prop artist Dan Baines tells the full story behind the infamous Derbyshire Fairy and how a simple art project unexpectedly escaped into the wild and took on a life of its own.
Featuring original artefacts, photographs and behind-the-scenes stories, Dan explores the creation of the hoax, the extraordinary media frenzy that followed, and the sometimes bizarre reactions from believers and sceptics alike.
Funny, strange and occasionally unsettling, it's the story of how one little mummified fairy became a piece of modern folklore — and why, even in the twenty-first century, we still desperately want to believe that there might be something hiding at the bottom of the garden.
